On arrival in Reykjavik, we will be met by our local representative and transferred to the hotel.
SUNDAY, AUGUST 13
Geysir – Gullfoss – Skogar – Dyrhólaey – Vik
Start the day with a short city sightseeing tour of Reykjavik. From Reykjavik head through the village of Hveragerð to explore Gullfoss, the "Golden Waterfall", and the nearby Geysir hot spring area to see the famous exploding Geysir and Strokkur, and numerous other hot springs and boiling mud pools. Continue along the black sand beaches of the south shore and stop to admire the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss before continuing to Dyrhólaey nature reserve, an area with amazing rock formations and abundant birdlife with puffins and eider ducks. We will end the day with dinner in the village of Vik. (B,D)
MONDAY, AUGUST 14
Vik – Skaftafell National Park – Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon – Höfn
Cross Eldhraun, the largest mass of lava fields ever to flow in recorded history, before reaching the small town Kirkjubæjarklaustur, site of a 12th-century Catholic convent. The tour continues over Skeidararsandur sands to Skaftafell National Park, Europe’s largest National Park. Continue to the stunning Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon to see the birthplace of icebergs. Here we will also enjoy a boat tour of Glacial Lagoon for an up close view of these magnificent glaciers and wildlife. Throughout the day we are afforded magnificent views of the mighty Vatnajökull Glacier. Tonight we relax with dinner in Höfn. (B,D)
TUESDAY, AUGUST 15
East Fjords – Egilsstaðir
Drive from Höfn through Almannaskarð pass; stop and admire the majestic coastline. Continue to the towering mountains, plunging vertically into the sea, that form the magnificent East Fjords. We will visit and explore Petra's renowned collection of local stones and minerals. Dinner in the Egilsstaðir area. (B,D)
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16
Lake Mývatn Area -Húsavík
Explore the empty vastness of the highland desert plateau Möðrudalsöræfi, heading to the Lake Mývatn area. On the way, we’ll make a stop at Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall. Onwards to Námaskarð Pass with its boiling mud pools and vibrant colors. Explore the natural beauty of the Lake Mývatn area, the pseudo craters at Skútustaðahreppur and Laxá salmon river. One of the Mývatn area's claims to fame is that it is home to more species of ducks than any other place on Earth, with very diverse birdlife in general. We will tour the Sigurgeir's Bird Museum. You will also be given a pass to enjoy the Mývatn Nature Baths, a great way to relax after dinner. (B,D)
THURSDAY, AUGUST 17
Húsavík – Akureyri - Dalvík
We start the day exploring the peculiar lava formations at Dimmuborgir. Continue to the bustling northern port of Akureyri, and we make a stop at the magnificent Goðafoss waterfall—which means Waterfall of the Gods. In Húsavík, we will enjoy a whale watching tour where we will have the chance to see orcas, humpbacks and blue whales. As we reach Akureyri we’ll see has some of the finest timber buildings in the country, beautifully restored to their original glory. We will visit the old turf farm Laufás and folk museum. (B)
FRIDAY, AUGUST 18
Dalvik -Skagafjörður – Borgarnes
Majestic mountains and narrow passes lead to Skagafjörður for an introduction to the Icelandic horse, which has a unique fifth gait, the tölt . We will watch this special breed of horses perform during a horse show. Continue to the village of Blönduós, which is built on both sides of the river Blanda, with Hrútey Island a protected nature reserve, located nearby in the middle of a popular salmon river. Cross the Holtavörðuheið plateau through Borgarfjörður to the beautiful town of Borgarnes. (B,D)
SATURDAY, AUGUST 19
Borgarfjörður – Þingvellir – Reykjavik
Today we drive to Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in the world. Stop to admire the beautiful Hraunfossar waterfalls, before continuing via Hvalfjörður fjord to Lake Þingvallavatn, Iceland's largest lake, and Þingvellir National Park the ancient site of the world's first outdoor parliament.
